Landscaping IDEAS for backyards

By Linda Ly

Backyards sometimes take a backseat to kitchens and family rooms as the center of home entertaining. But by freshening up the look of your outdoor space with the right kind of greenery, you can create a yard that feels like a little oasis and inspires fun gatherings with family and friends.

Here are three easy ideas for your next backyard landscaping project:

• Customize Your Walkway
• Add Potted Plants
• Plant Natural Hedges

Customize Your Walkway
First impressions are important, and you want your guests to feel at ease as soon as they enter your yard. Create a welcoming walkway with a clean, clear path flanked by neatly trimmed grass or attractive border plants. Ornamental grasses and traditional bedding plants (such as begonias, petunias, and geraniums) do well in sunny walkways, while moisture-loving hostas, hydrangeas, and ferns thrive in shady yards. To ensure your watering system only irrigates the plants, and not the path, install soaker hoses along the walkway and attach them to an electronic timer for hands-free watering.

Add Potted Plants
Containers are an easy way to add a splash of color to your backyard if you don’t have the space or resources for an in-ground garden. They’re also highly versatile, allowing you to rearrange your yard on a whim or change out plants to match the season or mood. Potted succulents are as low-maintenance as they come, while herbs like basil, lavender, and peppermint do double duty with their mosquito-repelling properties. Use a Flexogen Super Duty Hose with a thumb control watering nozzle to gently shower your container plants when needed.

Plant Natural Hedges
Are your neighbors too close for comfort? To assure privacy without the need for a tall fence, grow towering plants, shrubs, and trees that help obscure the view into your neighbor’s yard (and vice versa). Cypress, privet, boxwoods, bamboo, and bougainvillea are attractive, fast-growing options that can serve as privacy screens, windbreaks, and sound barriers. For irrigation that blends into the background and doesn’t waste a drop, weave soaker hoses between the shrubs and trees to target the water right at their roots.
