Arcadia Landscape Design
Arcadia Landscape Inc. has been landscaping Southern Arizona homes and businesses for 30 years, along the way winning accolades for its work on projects that include Miraval resort and spa, government facilities and high-end desert homes.
Arcadia’s owners, Jan and Tom Marshall, maintain that one of the company’s chief tenets in landscape design is that the environment be both beautiful and functional.
“We help clients with all aspects of their landscape project, including plant selection, irrigation, walkways, patios, outdoor fireplaces and low voltage lighting, ” said Jan Marshall.
She notes that Arcadia also has its own design team which can help home and business owners sharpen their vision of the space to be landscaped.
“A comprehensive landscape design is the tool that defines the scope of the project in detail, which helps the client visualize the space and allows our installation team to create a complete and accurate construction bid, ” said Jan Marshall.
Arcadia’s landscape designers are trained and qualified in the principles of garden design and hardscape solutions, bringing proportion, unity, balance, perspective, color and texture to the area under consideration.
Tom Marshall said the growth of Arcadia Landscaping from a single worker (himself) with a financed pickup truck and equipment to its current size of 36 full time employees, one part-time mechanic and 13 landscaping trucks meant expanding into the full range of design, installation and maintenance of landscape projects.
“Today we offer commercial and residential landscape maintenance, as well as the design and installation of landscapes, ” he said. “We’ve been in the same location since 1990 and are considering expanding into a larger building if the right opportunity comes along.”
He said Arcadia has a long list of clients in Southern Arizona, including public projects such as Pima County libraries, wastewater treatment facilities and the Sheriff’s Department; the City of Tucson’s Department of Public Housing Code Enforcement; the U.S. Postal Service; and a number of homeowner associations and management companies.
One of the most challenging jobs for Arcadia recently was at Miraval resort and spa in Catalina.
“It’s a private spa with a lot of restrictions about people working on site, ” Tom Marshall said. “The logistics of getting materials into certain areas where we had to work was difficult. Besides that, the main courtyard where we did a lot of the work was off the main lobby, and we had to get in there with jackhammers.
“Miraval had to put up soundproofing on the windows so they could work inside while we worked on the courtyard. We also had to do work on an interior courtyard, which meant we had to carry materials through the building.”
He said Arcadia installed a mix of lush plants and xeriscape vegetation at Miraval, along with a flagstone courtyard base and a number of other hardscapes (walls and benches).
“We had some tight deadlines to deal with too, ” he added. “We had to have it done before they hosted an Oprah Winfrey event that they had scheduled. It was one of the more challenging jobs we’ve done.”
Jan Marshall attributes some of Arcadia’s success in business to the networking relationships the couple has built up in the area.
