Small Space Landscape Design

Proper design will help ensure a successful and beautiful native plant garden. In this class you will learn how to create a list of goals for your landscape, analyze your site (soils, light, water, drainage, slope, traffic patterns, neighboring conditions, etc.) and perform an inventory of existing features. You will also learn about base maps (what they are and how to create and use them) and designing a garden layout and conceptual plan. It also covers how to incorporate existing plants and other features into a fresh design and how to find helpful resources or professional assistance.

Designing a city yard carries with it a whole set of needs and requirements: how to have space for all you want in your yard; selecting furnishings, plants and landscape elements in scale with your property and home; screening unwanted views with little space; and creating a sense of privacy. These are but a few of the special design decisions when working with relative small spaces, perhaps an acre or less. And when a large piece of your yard is taken up with parking, the design becomes difficult to think about. In this class we will see examples of small space designs and look at the use of pattern to help your landscape feel organized and spacious. We step you through a process to create the perfect outdoor rooms for your entertainment, beauty and practicality.
